Seattle Art Source, founded by Sarah Hurt in 2017, bridges the gap between local artists and collectors, creating a vibrant pathway to bring meaningful art into homes and communities. With a deep commitment to the Pacific Northwest arts scene, Sarah's approach is rooted in personalization, sustainability, and a passion for fostering connection. From guiding first-time buyers to curating large-scale installations, Sarah's expertise shines in helping clients discover pieces that resonate deeply and elevate their living spaces.
Can you share the story behind Seattle Art Source? What inspired you to create a company focused on connecting people with art?
I started Seattle Art Source in 2017 after working with a few local artists and recognized an opportunity to create a clear pathway to art buyers. The art buying process is not always straightforward and I wanted to provide an approachable way for designers and individuals to purchase local art.
It's been through this process that I’ve grown to understand the true impact of how important it is to add beauty to our daily lives. It is such a joy to walk through the art buying process with clients and see how adding art to their lived environment can elevate their quality of life.
How do you curate the art pieces you feature? Are there particular styles, mediums, or themes you prioritize?
I represent over 50 artists and our roster is deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest although we have grown to include artists outside the region now. I am always looking for work that has something to say, that is fresh and captivating. I am a sucker for materials artists and am recently branching into sculpture. So no rules per se, but it has to stop me and make me think.
Supporting local artists is a wonderful mission. How do you collaborate with Seattle-based or regional artists to bring their work to the forefront?
It is the deep undercurrent of the vision of Seattle Art Source to contribute to the health of the arts community in the Pacific Northwest. We promote the art work by fostering collector relationships, providing platforms for artists talks and exhibitions and creating a community for our artists and collectors. It’s a constellation of efforts.
What advice do you have for homeowners who want to incorporate art into their spaces? Are there specific pieces or styles that resonate well in modern Eastside homes?
First and foremost, buy what you love. And if you don’t know what you love, or don’t know where to start, that is where I can help! A big part of the process is to just begin by taking art “in”, be curious about it, seek it out in your community and develop your own personal “palette”. It doesn’t have to cost a lot, or be laborious. Engage at the scale that is fun for you. Seattle has many art walks to participate in and again, feel free to call me. I am here to help.
You offer art consulting services. Can you share how the process works and how you help clients find pieces that truly reflect their personalities or spaces?
I often start by visiting clients in their home who want to purchase art and are not sure where to start. Seeing the space is critical and art is so personal which makes this step really about me getting to know them since the art needs to reflect their taste and aesthetics. The following steps can vary from working with Seattle Art Source roster artists, to a comprehensive art portfolio that includes traveling to another location together to find art that satisfies the criteria. Each project is as individual as each client so I tailor the art brief accordingly. And for clients that are not sure they need all the “Bells and Whistles”, they are welcome to make an appointment to meet me at my Georgetown showroom to chat and browse through some art. This is a low stakes first step that is free of charge.
What art trends are you noticing in home design, and how do you balance those with timeless aesthetics?
There is certainly a swing towards More is More in the interiors trends although it hasn’t fully reached the Pacific Northwest yet. But when it comes to art, the most durable art decisions are the ones when you emotionally connect with the work. You won’t tire of art that carries a strong narrative for you and with which you have a strong personal connection.
Does Seattle Art Source incorporate sustainability into its practices, and how do you build a sense of community through art?
Sustainability is a way of life for all of us and I am grateful to live in a region that puts a high priority on sustainable business practices. One example in my industry is that shipping art used to require custom wood crates that were single use which was incredibly wasteful and I am proud to say that we have moved away from this practice. With few expectations, Seattle Art Source is able to use reusable packing materials when shipping art and it creates almost zero waste.
Are there any standout moments or favorite client projects where your art transformed a space in a significant way?
Seattle Art Source works with both residential and commercial clients and has been involved in creating large scale art scopes for several affordable housing developments in the pacific northwest. These large multi acre housing developments were the vision of an art forward developer which enabled us to provide fantastic art activation for hundreds of people that will be enjoyed for years to come. These projects were a collaborative process with the community and deeply satisfying for me.
What role does Seattle Art Source play in supporting emerging artists, and how can homeowners be part of this effort?
We work with many emerging artists and it is a compelling part of our programming. Because I am uniquely positioned to sign artists who are early in their careers, it creates an opportunity for my community of clients to connect with artists they love and who they can invest with at a very early stage. As a collector of early works, you watch and listen to the art news differently and it is exciting to be part of the support network for an artist early in their trajectory.
What’s next for Seattle Art Source? Any exciting upcoming collaborations or initiatives that our readers should know about?
2025 is going to be a really exciting year for us. We are launching several new artists which will be announced in Q1, our newly renovated gallery space will be in full swing and we have our first Seattle Art Fair to look forward to in July. We are entering our 9th year of business with a solid foundation of business built on years of relationships with collectors and artists alike and I am excited to see what happens next.
